Snow Goose Migration Creates a Stunning Spring Experience Across Idaho

Each spring, thousands of snow geese migrate through Idaho on their journey north to breeding grounds in Canada and Alaska. The birds stop throughout the state to rest and refuel before continuing their migration, creating an impressive sight for bird watchers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Observers often describe the experience as unforgettable, with massive flocks filling wetlands and fields and sometimes appearing like a moving cloud overhead as they take flight.

In Eastern Idaho, the migration can often be seen around areas such as American Falls and across the Upper Snake River Valley as the birds follow the melting snow line north. Some migrations can include tens of thousands of geese stopping briefly to recharge before continuing their journey.

Natural experiences like this are one of the many reasons people choose to live and work in Eastern Idaho. Access to outdoor recreation, wildlife, and scenic landscapes contributes to a high quality of life that helps attract and retain talent across the region.

At REDI, we recognize that livability plays an important role in economic development. The region’s access to nature, outdoor recreation, and unique seasonal experiences helps make Eastern Idaho a place where people want to build careers, grow businesses, and raise families.
